Topping up a Nigerian number follows the same chain as anywhere else: you pay a reseller, and the reseller submits the top-up to the operator. Whether it works depends first on coverage, then on whether the product suits the number.

This guide is based on what Bitrefill's Nigeria refill catalogue publicly displayed on 9 September 2026. At that time the page listed MTN, Airtel, Glo and 9mobile, and listed data products such as Airtel Data separately from ordinary airtime. Coverage changes; the page as it stands when you order is what counts.

No Nigerian number has been tested with a real top-up here.

Key points

  • MTN, Airtel, Glo and 9mobile all appeared on the day it was checked
  • Data products are listed separately from airtime — do not mix them up
  • 9mobile product paths still carry its former name, Etisalat
  • Airtel operates in several countries; select the country before the operator
  • Confirm arrival on the operator's side, not from the order status

Airtime and data are separate products here

The page lists data products such as Airtel Data apart from ordinary airtime refills. That means reading the product name for words like Data or bundle before selecting.

General airtime covers calls and texts and can usually buy data from the operator's own menu; a data bundle is internet only and generally cannot be converted back into balance. When you are unsure what the recipient wants, general airtime is more forgiving.

Confirm these before ordering

All of these are on the top-up form. Walking through them takes a minute and prevents most "paid but nothing arrived" orders.

  • The country is selected correctly and the country code is not entered twice.
  • The carrier matches what the handset shows — number ranges are unreliable after porting.
  • Whether the number is prepaid or postpaid, and whether the product supports it.
  • Whether you are buying airtime credit or a data bundle; they do not interchange.
  • The denomination's currency and how it converts against your payment asset.
  • The payment networks the checkout lists right now, not from an old note.

Renamed operators cause avoidable errors

9mobile was formerly Etisalat Nigeria, and some pages still carry the old name in paths or labels. Go by the operator name the page currently displays, and have the number's owner confirm their current carrier on the handset.

Nigeria also has number portability, so inferring the operator from the number range is unreliable. A top-up sent to the wrong operator is normally not refunded.

Confirming arrival, and what to do if it does not

"Completed" usually means the instruction was submitted, not that the operator has credited the account. Confirm on the number using the operator's own method.

Once you have confirmed nothing arrived, submit the order number, the phone number, the time and the payment record through the platform's official channel, and do not reorder. Bitrefill's help centre states undelivered orders are refunded once you supply a refund address, within 30 days of the transaction; delivered voucher codes are not refunded.

Frequently asked questions

Is MTN or Airtel more likely to work?

No comparison is offered here, and no real top-up has been tested. Whether a top-up succeeds depends on the channel at that moment and on the number itself, not on a fixed difference between operators.

I cannot find 9mobile on the page.

Check whether paths or labels still say Etisalat. If that operator genuinely has no products listed, the channel was unavailable at the time — change platform or payment method rather than picking a similar-sounding name.

Can I top up someone else's number?

Yes, but confirm the number, operator and product type with them directly, and have them confirm arrival. Topping up for another person fails noticeably more often.
