A mistyped number is the costliest error in this kind of order, for a direct reason: once the top-up is delivered, the money has become balance on someone else's number. Operators have no mechanism to take it back, and neither do resellers.
Bitrefill's refund policy is explicit about this: successfully delivered products cannot be refunded, and it advises verifying recipient details before ordering precisely because a delivered product is not refundable regardless of whether the wrong item was chosen.
This guide covers what is still worth trying, and then how to remove this error from your process.
Key points
- A delivered top-up usually cannot be recovered
- Contacting the platform immediately is still worth doing, with low expectations
- Confirm the first order's status before topping up the correct number
- Type numbers by hand and read them back; do not paste from chat
- When topping up for others, have them send the full number then and there
Three things to do straight away
The sooner you act, the more of the small remaining room you keep.
- Screenshot the order page and note the order number, delivery time and the number you entered.
- Contact the platform through its official channel and state that the number was entered incorrectly. Not through search ads or direct messages.
- If the order does not yet show as delivered, say so explicitly — undelivered orders have far more room.
What to realistically expect
If the order has not been delivered, the platform can usually cancel and refund. That is the only situation with real room, which is why speed matters.
If it has been delivered to a real number, almost no platform refunds it. That is not obstruction: the top-up has entered the operator's system and been credited to someone else's account, and the platform has no way to reverse it. Occasionally, if the number does not exist or the operator rejects the top-up, the order fails — in which case the failed-order refund process applies.
| Order status | Room | What to say |
|---|---|---|
| Not delivered / processing | Reasonable, cancellation possible | State the number is wrong and ask to cancel now |
| Delivered to a real number | Effectively none | Still submit, but expect little |
| Failed / number invalid | Follows the failed-order refund | Use the platform's failed-order process |
What not to do
While you wait for an answer, these make things worse.
- Do not immediately top up the correct number — confirm the first order's status first, or neither will be easy to explain.
- Do not contact the stranger whose number received it asking for the money back; it is neither safe nor likely to work.
- Do not trust anyone who messages you first claiming to be support or offering recovery.
- Never enter a recovery phrase, private key or verification code anywhere.
Removing this error from your process
Entering the number is the only irreversible step in the flow with no second confirmation, which makes it worth a small process of its own.
- Get the full number from the person there and then, including country code. Do not dig it out of old messages.
- Type it by hand rather than pasting from a chat app, which can carry spaces or invisible characters.
- Read it back digit by digit rather than glancing over it.
- Check whether the country code is a separate field, so it is not entered twice.
- Check whether the local number's leading zero should be dropped.
- If the page detects a carrier before you pay, confirm that detection with the recipient.
One extra step when topping up for others
Topping up for someone else goes wrong noticeably more often, because the number is second-hand information. Send the number back to them to confirm before submitting; it costs half a minute and catches almost every error.
Arrival also has to be confirmed by them on their own handset. Your order status does not count.
Frequently asked questions
If the number does not exist, do I get the money back?
If the operator rejects it and the order is marked failed, the failed-order refund normally applies. But any real number, even the wrong one, counts as successful delivery.
Can the platform claw it back from the other number?
No. Resellers have no such access, and operators generally will not debit a subscriber's account at a payer's request.
How quickly do I need to raise it?
As fast as possible. The only meaningful window is while the order is still undelivered. Bitrefill's separate 30-day limit applies to cases that are refundable in the first place.
